Hawaii News Now’s Q&A with the cast of Hawaii Five-0

Just released from Hawaii News Now, Teri Okita’s piece will air tonight at the 10 PM broadcast.

Hawaii Five-0 cast answers viewers’ questions

By Teri Okita

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – You may have noticed a lot of marquee names guest starring on Hawaii Five-0 this year – from Sean Combs to Nick Lachey to Dane Cook and Chef Morimoto. So, we asked the cast what they think about all those famous faces on set.

It doesn’t take much coaxing to get A-list stars on the set. “Everybody that’s come on board as guest actors, it goes to show people must really like the show and believe in the show,” says Alex O’Loughlin who plays Steve McGarrett on the show.

The cast welcomes the new energy these big names bring but still feels Five-0 has strengths, with or without guests.

Grace Park, who plays Kono Kalakaua, says, “A show has to hold its own and preserve its integrity to be able to bring on someone (like Sean Combs) like that, you know? And I think, as long as we maintain that, then you can keep bringing these people.”

Then, we brought along questions that you, the faithful viewers, emailed and Facebooked to us. We started with Daniel Dae Kim.

Teri: “This is from Connie L. Was the bike written for you or was it your choice?” Daniel: “The motorcycle came into play when my executive producer said that he loved motorcycles, and so we started having a discussion about motorcycles, and he decided that it might be cool for Chinn Ho to ride one and asked me whether I’d be interested, and I said, ‘Absolutely'”.

Next, a viewer question for Scott Caan, who plays Danno.

Teri: “Noriski asks: How much of Scott is there in Danny -or how much of Danny is there in Scott?” Scott: “Well, I mean, that’s a tricky question because obviously, it’s all me. But I don’t dislike ocean. I don’t dislike Hawaii so … it’s that stuff on paper is not like me but anything you see, mannerism-wise or attitude or behavior, that’s all me.”

Hawaii News Now received a flood of emails for O’Loughlin.

Teri: “This is from Jamie.” Alex looks into the camera. “Hi, Jamie.” Teri: “How long did it take you to perfect your American accent?” Alex: “Well, look, first of all, I kind of grew up with a North American sound in the house. My stepdad is Canadian, but he has a very clear North American sound so that was all around me as a child. And I also grew up with American TV, like all of us Australians.”

Grace Park had fun with your questions.

Teri: “Thaibeauty21 wants to know: do you want Kono to have a love interest on the show? If so, who do you want to play him?” Grace: “Oh, I would love to have a love interest. I always think it adds another dynamic, and it’s fun. I don’t want it to be within the team. I know there’s been some talk of that. That’s just a little weird. It’s like your brother!” Teri: “Is there an actor that you might have in mind that you’d want?” Grace: “I don’t know, there’s a few pretty good … Um, how about Charlie Sheen?!” she said with a big laugh.

Another question for Caan.

Teri: “Twitter@mymaxius asks: “You have a great eye for photography. Have you considered using your gorgeous co-stars as subject matter? Wink. There’s a wink at the end of this tweet.” Scott: “A wink? I’ve shot photos of them all, yeah. They’re like, as far as subjects, they’re like in the medium category. You know what I mean?” he smiles. Teri: “What do you do with the pictures?” Scott jokes: “I sell them!”

Another question for Daniel Dae Kim.

Teri: “Musicfreak26 wants to know: what’s your favorite part about working in Hawaii?” Daniel: “I think knowing that once you leave work, it’s not an industry town and not everyone is talking about your job or their job in the same business. I like the fact that people leave work, and they have pau hana and go surfing or be outdoors and go running, and they leave it all behind and I love that.”

And a final question for O’Loughlin.

Teri: “Donna Hall wants to know: will you please Twitter! Why haven’t you joined a social network?” Alex: “I would rather set fire to myself than join social network! Only because, I’ll tell you why, Donna. Okay, at the moment, I’m going to have a look. I’m going to reach into my pocket, and I’m going to get my phone out and I’m going to have a look. Okay, if you see here, it’s says 97 unanswered emails. 97!! They’re all emails I have to answer. I’m so unmanageable when it comes to that stuff. If I had Facebook, Twitter, anything like that, I don’t know what would happen. I would probably have to start taking some pharmaceutical narcotic just to cope with the stress and anxiety, and then, McGarrett would become a very different character!”

Here’s an inside scoop: as season one winds down, we’re told all the camaraderie the Five-0 team built this year is going to become fractured in ways we never imagined. Stay tuned.

Hey… my question for Scott actually made it to the interview 🙂 I was so not expecting that seeing how many 100’s of questions were asked. YAY.

  2. Cindy says:

Thank you for posting this so quickly and keeping us informed, especially while we are waiting to have a new H5-0 episode. Nice to hear something new. Cute answers.

  3. jadore says:

A-list guest stars! LMAO! I would hardly consider Nick Lachey or Sean Combs “A-listed actors”, because if they are, this show is in a lot of trouble.

    • Mercedes says:

I think they mean “well-known” actors. It brings credibility to a show when popular entertainers want to be a part if a show. I’m sure no one thinks these guest stars are Oscar caliber. But, their star power I’d undeniable and good publicity for the show.

  4. Linda Stein says:

Was it only those 6 or so questions asked or is there more of the interview besides what’s on that one link? There were so many lame questions and so many brilliant ones I can’t believe those were the only ones they asked. Norriski asked a good question but the others are so predictable. I am so tired of hearing Alex explain about his Canadian step-father’s North American accent HE must be tired of answersing the same questions too. I did find his answer to Facebook and Twitter funny. Oh well, I guess we’ll never hear from him.

    • Mercedes says:

I feel the same way for Alex. People ask him such vapid questions. They See him as only a pretty face, not the trained actor he really is. I’m sure he’d Love to be asked about how he’s like his character, or how he preps for certain storylines!

    • officer808 says:

They’re busy people, and I’m sure a lot of people aren’t happy by Alex’s response, but hey it’s an honest and legitimate reason!

  5. Cecile says:

I’m more and more getting the feeling that Chin Ho’s really not that innocent. I mean, we know he covered for someone, but what else did he do ?
Who do you think the fracture will come from ? From what we know :
    – Kono has no history (unless she was in on Chin Ho’s sting ? That would explain why they’re so close, and how she knows about the secret vault) ;
    – Danny cannot cross the law (he’s done it twice now, and it’s been awfully traumatic for him, both times !), but he’s got the biggest mouth, so he might be the first to draw the line. Having been betrayed by his blood family, he might have trouble keeping trusting his new family…
    – Steve is military uptight, but he’s hard core in his interrogation methods ! Maybe he’ll cross Danny’s violence tolerance line one too many times.
    – And Chin Ho…well, you know so little about him, anything can be possible !

    What do you think ?

    • Kimmer says:

As much as it makes me sad that the team will not be as cohesive next season, I think it will open up so much more opportunity for character development with this “fracture”.

I agree with you Cecile – I think it will be Chin Ho. He is the one with the big unanswered void in his past. I think back to the scene with Chin and Danny in the bar (the Meka epi) and how Danny told Chin that he would always have his back (or something like that) and what would happen if it came out that Chin actually had done something bad.

  6. Linda Stein says:

Hmmm…Chin? Yes, that could possibly be! I agree, it won’t be Kono. She’s only been a cop for a few of months which would make her about what, 23 to 25 years old. Chin was fired 3 years ago for the missinig money and the main bust went down 5 years before that. I don’t think she was involved in it but she may know about it because I think Chin could have told her. If you think about it, Chin lost his entire family when he lost his job but Kono was always on his side. He could have confided in her simply because he needed SOMEONE to talk to and there was no one else he could rely on. He could have told her about the evidence locker then.

I think for this team, which has grown sooooo close to be “fractured” it would have to be something MAJOR. For Danny, if the team put Grace in danger, THAT would set him off, but I can’t see that ever happening, they are all so protective of Grace.

It has to do with Steve and his parents murders obviously. If the money trail leads to that investigation and, somehow, Chin is more involved than apparent and Steve finds out about it, NOT from Chin but some other way, I can see Steve going balistic. I can see Kono defending Chin and Danny siding with Steve and/or being torn between Steve and Chin. That would mean taking sides and that is never good for the chemistry of a TEAM.

Dear God, it’s going to be a long summer!!!

    • Cecile says:

I like you last case scenario, that’s what I think too. It all depends on what Chin would have done, but I see Danny being torn and not knowing what to do. He’s very intellectual as far as relationships are concerned, I don’t think he would blow the team spirit for any light reason.
As much as he likes Steve, Danny’s view on life, and family, is closer to Chin and Kono’s.
But if so, it’d mean Steve’s left on his own, which would be a bad thing for everyone. Resentment is not what I want to see in the team’s dynamic !!

Danny playing the white flag, and going back and forth to have the two sides communicate in some way, like Chin did (as Kimmer said before), is an appealing idea !

  7. Linda Stein says:

There is also the added element of the governor. Jean Smart signed on to do a pilot for I think NBC and if that show is picked up she won’t be able to be the governor anymore. One of two things could happen. We may just not see the governor anymore, Steve just talking to her on the phone or in meetings that we never see or there could be a new governor. Terms in office end and elections are lost all the time. The new governor may not be too thrilled with the “ammunity and means” nature of their work. That could cause much conflict especially of it is found out how often this team skirts the line.

  8. Corrie Howe says:

I hate the idea of a fracture. I’m surprised no one brought up the fact that the money they “borrowed” was mysteriously returned some how playing into this fracture…or maybe that’s what everyone is implying when they think Chin is somehow involved.

When I started reading about “fracture” and “consequences” for being given carte blanche, I was thinking something like NCIS or Bones. NCIS team being broken up by the director…So the Governor breaks up the team because of the money missing from the vault. Or Bones, when everyone pursued their own thing for a time….Steve concentrates on his parents’ murder, Danny following Grace when Rachel/StepStan take a year to travel, Kono getting back into surfing and Chin pursuing his former fiancee…or something like this.

It would be hard to imagine the writer’s doing something to cause the team to turn on one another without it permanently messing up the chemistry they’ve developed.

    • Kimmer says:

Ugh – I hope it isn’t something that will bring them to seperate storylines. The series is still too new for that – especially since it is the interaction between the main characters that makes this show work.

I’m hoping that the fracture advances the Wo Fat/missing money/ Steve’s mother storylines. I would also think that it would be something that wouldn’t permanently fracture the 5-0 team, like maybe Chin Ho keeps holding back information that is necessary (in order to keep protecting whomever it is that he is protecting) and Steve finds out that he is keeping something from him.

    • Cecile says:

@ Corrie : that’s what we’re implying by talking about Chin’s involvement. We’ve devoted many many comments on how the money was replaced, and by whom ! The only conclusion that we (almost) all agreed on was that it’s linked to Wo Fat, who’s linked to McGarrett Sr’s investigation, which is linked to Chin’s being evicted from the Police 3 years ago.

Breaking (and most importantly relinking) the team à la Bones wouldn’t be easy, they’ve only know each others for a few months, not 6 years. The future of the series would be very much compromised !
But being dismantled by the Governor is more possible. The money theft is definitly going to get back in their face, somehow. The consequences would be really important : not only would the 5-0 team be officially broken up, but I guess Danny and Kono would also be let go of the police. With three of them black listed from the police, and a SEAL with no jurisdiction in anything regarding his father’s investigation, it will prove difficult to go forth ! That’d be interesting to see !

@Linda : maybe they can have Jean Smart once or twice in Hawaii, do a few scenes, and record a few phone conversations from LA or wherever she’ll be ? I like her !

      • Linda Stein says:

I like her too. Do networks usually lend actors to other networks for cameo appearances? If so, that would be great!

  9. Corrie Howe says:

I agree I think it is WAY TOO EARLY to talk about fracturing the team at all. I hope the powers that be know what they are doing (fingers crossed). But it seems they are committed to this path.

I didn’t really want to see a season of the team split into separate story lines. I didn’t like the last two when Danny went his own way while the team went theirs. I was thinking more along the lines of implying it.

I’m more in favor of an outside force fracturing them which will only cement the team together more in their commitment to one another.

Anybody suggest that the Navy calls Steve back to duty? Before my husband retired, a combination of a flare up in Afghanistan and shortage of experienced Naval officers had us sitting on edge for a year that he might not be allowed to retire. Steve’s intelligence background and SEAL training would make him prime to reactivate. And even more so since in the pilot Steve said he’d finish out his career in the reserves. We know a lot of friends in the reserves who were activated again because of the shortage of experience and expertise.

I don’t know how the writers would work this, but it was a thought that just occurred to me.

    • officer808 says:

Taking away the governor’s/state support, loss of their super computers and facility and fracturing the team are huge conflicts that could be successfully written in well into the series, such as the 3rd or 4th season, after we’ve resolved many of their personal issues.

  10. Linda Stein says:

Of course we could all be worrying needlessly. LOST was always very good at throwing out a nugget of information or showing a trailer that implied some huge story line or a death of a major character or some other thing that we all freaked out about. Then when it aired it was so trivial it was almost laughable the way we all worried and discussed it beforehand. Having so many weeks between new episodes doesn’t help. We’re all so desperate to get our show back we’re grasping at anything and everything we can. It possible the team could be “fractured” for ONE show and that could be the end of it. Of course, it’s possible I have no clue what I’m talking about LOL

    • Cecile says:

I’m sure we’re seeing it bigger than it really is ! There would be no show left if they actually broke the team up for good ! But it gives us something to do while waiting for a new development !
For all we know “fractured” could simply apply to Steve’s arm, which we’ve been seeing a lot in recent videos 😉

      • officer808 says:

Yeah I’m with Cecile on the fracture…

      • Kimmer says:

Ha! That’s a good one – and probably correct. (fingers crossed).

Or, what if, in the interest of the investigation into the money/Chin Ho’s setup, they fake that they are disbanding? Danny and Kono go back to HPD to get on the inside, leaving Steve/Chin Ho to continue the inveestigation on the down low?

Argh! Which one of us said it was going to be a long summer>?!? You were right!

    • textbook says:

Linda, best point made so far. Cecile, Kimmer, (next comments) more good thinking.

  11. hawaiiobsessed says:

I am hoping the “fracture” is Steve’s arm! I love Jean Smart as the gov but maybe they will re-cast it if her pilot is picked up?
